What Eagle Shelf Is

Eagle Shelf is a local-first catalog for physical books you own.

It is designed to help you:

• keep a private record of your collection
• catalog editions and copies separately
• scan ISBNs on supported devices
• use OCR-assisted copyright-page capture when needed
• export and restore your library with backup files

How To Add Books

You can add books in several ways:

• manually enter title, author, ISBN, and other details
• scan an ISBN barcode on a supported device
• use metadata lookup after entering or scanning an ISBN
• scan a copyright page to help fill edition-related details

The app includes a review step before saving a book.

How Scanning Works

ISBN scanning

• Open the add-book flow.
• Use the Scan action next to the ISBN field.
• On supported devices, Eagle Shelf uses the camera to read an ISBN barcode.
• The scanned ISBN is placed into the form for review before save.

Copyright-page scanning

• Open the add-book flow.
• Choose Scan Copyright Page.
• Capture the copyright page near the front of the book.
• Eagle Shelf may use OCR to recognize text from that page and suggest edition-related details for review.

How Export and Import Backup Work

Eagle Shelf stores your library locally on your device, so backups matter.

Export

• Use the export/share action in the app.
• Save the generated JSON backup file somewhere you can find later.
• Verify the file exists before deleting the app or moving devices.

Import

• Use the import action in the app.
• Select a valid Eagle Shelf JSON backup file.
• Import is intended to restore a backup into an empty library.

Troubleshooting

The camera scanner does not open

• Confirm your device supports the scanner workflow.
• Confirm Eagle Shelf has camera permission in iOS Settings.
• If scanning is unavailable, enter the ISBN manually.

Copyright-page OCR did not give the result I expected

• Capture the copyright page near the front of the book.
• Make sure the page is clear and well lit.
• Review any suggested details before saving.
• Continue with manual entry if needed.

Metadata lookup did not return results

• Confirm the ISBN is valid.
• Retry with a clean ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 value.
• Continue with manual entry if no useful result is returned.

Import did not work

• Confirm the file is a valid Eagle Shelf JSON backup.
• Import is intended for an empty library.
• If your library is not empty, export your current library first before replacing it with a restored backup.

Export did not appear where I expected

• Complete the iOS share flow.
• Save the backup file to Files or another location you manage.
• Confirm the file is present before relying on it as your only backup.
